RABIES : A SILENT KILLER WE CAN PREVENT

Rabies remains one of the deadliest viral diseases known to humankind. It spreads most often through the bite of an infected dog, and once symptoms appear, the disease is almost always fatal. There is no cure for rabies it leads to a painful death, affecting both humans and animals.
India today accounts for nearly 36% of global rabies cases, the highest burden worldwide. This is a public health crisis that urgently calls for collective action. While vaccination after a bite can save lives, the long-term solution lies in controlling the street dog population responsibly through sterilisation drives and ensuring routine anti-rabies vaccination of dogs.
Around the world, several countries have shown us that rabies elimination is possible:
A)Latin America: Large-scale dog vaccination campaigns have drastically reduced rabies cases in countries like Mexico and Brazil.
B)Europe and North America: Rabies has been virtually eliminated in most regions through animal vaccination, strict control of stray animals, and public health awareness.
C)Southeast Asia and Africa: Multinational collaborations and the “One Health” approach linking veterinary care, human health, and local communities have shown promising results.

The World Health Organization (WHO), OIE, and FAO have set a global goal of “Zero by 30” aiming for zero human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030.
India’s sterilisation and vaccination drives are therefore not just about reducing stray dog numbers they are about saving human lives, preventing needless suffering, and safeguarding public health.
Rabies is 100% preventable. With awareness, vaccination, and responsible action, it can be defeated.
