Advantages of Hospital-Run Pharmacies
- Convenience for patients
Patients get their prescribed medicines immediately, without having to search outside. This is especially helpful for:
a)Emergency cases
b)Elderly patients
Patients unfamiliar with the local area - Reduced chances of incorrect or substitute medicines.
Hospital pharmacies usually carry the exact brands or formulations that the doctor prescribes, reducing:
a)Wrong medication
b)Ineffective substitutes
c)Dosage mistakes - Better coordination with doctors:
If there is a stock issue or a need for clarification, the pharmacy can directly communicate with the doctor.
The Concerns and Criticisms associated are :
- Higher cost of medicines:
Many patients feel that hospitals push them to buy expensive brands or medicines available only in the hospital pharmacy. This creates a perception that Doctors and hospitals may be profiting from pharmacy sales. And Medicine prices are inflated - Limited choice for patients:
Some hospitals restrict prescriptions to drugs available exclusively in their pharmacy, removing the patient’s freedom to Compare prices, Buy generics from outside chemistsand Choose more affordable alternatives - Negative impact on local chemists
Independent chemists lose business because hospitals keep the majority of prescriptions in-house.This affects the livelihood of small pharmacy owners and reduces competition, which can eventually push prices UP.
Based on common review patterns and patient feedback the following observations were seen:
1)Best for patients when Hospital pharmacies offer reasonable pricingand Patients have the freedom to buy medicines elsewhere. Hospitals provide transparency about pricing and generics and when Urgent or complex prescriptions require prescription fulfilment .
2)Not good for patients when Hospitals force patients to buy only from their pharmacy and Prices are inflated.
Moreover Prescribed medicines have cheaper generic alternatives but the doctor doesn’t disclose them.
Neither system is perfect.
The best model is a hybrid approach.
In reality the Hospitals should offer a pharmacy for convenience. But Patients should still have the right to buy medicines from outside. And Doctors should prescribe generics or give options when possible.
Pricing transparency should be mandatory as it ensures:
1)Convenience
2)Fair pricing
3)Freedom of choice
4)Healthy competition
5)Better quality care
